Soundcloud, a German music startup, won the New Business Showcase at the Music Ally/MidemNet at the Midem Music Conference against six other startups.
Their service is an easy storage alternative for distributing music around the web. They seek to solve the hassles that come with sending/receiving/distributing music between artists, labels and producers. What I really love about Soundcloud is the ability to put a simple widget on any blog that allows users to send tracks to them. This feature could work well for musicians looking to get press or some music reviewed by various blogs. The initial limitations of a free account is a little bothersome (they only allow a few tracks to be stored in your “cloud”), but they are trying to make a business out of it.
I’ve always wanted a program such as this for bands. It could be a very easy way to demo tracks for an upcoming album or provide an easy way to listen to scratch tracks that were recorded at band practice. Also, it could be used for managers trying to show the label side what his band has been up to recently. Soundcloud could speed up productivity and offer every musician in the band an easy way to grab and listen to a track if they want to work or brainstorm on its structure.
